Our May program will be presented by long-time member Walter Teague, a past club treasurer who has spoken previously about his botanical travels. This time he will show pictures from a trip to northern Chile, covering the area between the Peruvian border in the north and Tal Tal, near Copiapó. This latter town has lent its name to the genus Copiapoa, and these remarkable cacti will be featured in Walter’s talk. This northern part of Chile is very arid, with nearly all of the water to sustain plant growth supplied by fog from the ocean, rather than rainfall.

Featured Growers: SFSCS member, Alex Rigg.
Show and Tell: Our featured plants this month for the show-and-tell table will be Copiapoas, terrestrial bromeliads, and plants in the Portulacaceae (this includes Calandrinia, Talinum, Anacampseros, Lewisia, Portulaca and Portulacaria). Any particularly beautiful plant is also welcome at our table. |
