Our March meeting will feature a presentation by Ernesto Sandoval, who oversees the greenhouse collection of succulents at UC Davis. Ernesto spent the first two months of 2008, January and February, in South Africa. As you may recall from his most recent presentation he spent most of his days in the field visiting nature reserves within the fynbos vegetation of the Cape Floristic Region, where over 8,700 species of plants are to be found on 6% of South Africa's land area!
In an attempt to share more of his experiences there, Ernesto Sandoval is back to San Francisco for the succulents-focused sequel. The highlights will focus on short trips to Namaqualand and Namibia, including the amazing Welwitschia. He visited wet as well as dry places, and saw tree aloes such as Aloe dichotoma and the rare Aloe pillansii. Ernesto always likes to remind us that our succulent plants come from places where other plants and creatures grow, so be prepared to learn about other creatures from these dry places.
