Land of the Incas with speaker Guillermo Rivera

Our presentation for March is entitled Cacti of Peru: Land of the Incas by Guillermo Rivera. He will cover a voyage through the whole country of Peru: from the dry and deciduous forest in the North around the cities of Chiclayo and Jaen, to the lower slopes of the Andes into the Amazon region. We will explore the habitats around Huaraz, a beautiful town nestled in the valley between the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Negra. In the end we will cross the Andes once again heading towards the Sacred Valley of the Incas to finish our voyage in Machu Pichu. We will see amazing Matucanas in flower, high elevation Oroyas, spectacular Neoraimondias and the most incredible bromeliad Puya raimondii, with its inflorescence of over 20 feet tall.

Guillermo has a PhD in Botany from the University of Cordoba, Argentina and was a researcher there for a time before forming a tour company named Cactus Expeditions to show the diversity of succulents in South America to people from many countries. His tour operations have now expanded to encompass national parks and wildlife, bromeliads and birds and go under the new moniker South America Nature Tours.

More than fifteen members of SFSCS and the Bromeliad Society have been on one or more of these South American trips and can highly recommend them to others! Guillermo will be leading a couple of tours to Peru this year: July 2nd–18th and September 8th– 24th. These are all-inclusive trips (hotels, meals, transportation, entrance fees etc.) and culminate in a visit to Machu Pichu! Contact at www.southamericanaturetours.com, or come to the meeting and talk to Guiilermo directly!

Marilyn Mangle will be our featured grower. She will bring a good selection from the Club’s plants.

The plants of the month are mammillarias and echeverias. Members are encouraged to bring in any other plant which is flowering or looking good to share it with the other members.
