Sansevieria in Habitat with speaker Bob Webb

For the June meeting, we will have a special presentation by Bob Webb on the genus Sansevieria. This group is best known for the "mother-in-law's tongue," Sansevieria trifasciata, which is commonly grown as a houseplant. Many variegated types with yellow of white streaking are in cultivation. A number of species have leaves that are cylindrical rather than flattened like S. trifasciata, usually with attractive markings in dark and light green. Sansevieria flowers open at night, when moths are active, and most species emit a sweey aroma. In nature, Sansevieria's occur from Southern Africa up to Arabia, and may also be found in India. East Africa is home to a rich assortment, and Bob has photographed many there. He has also photographed Sansevierias in South Africa and Yemen.

Featured Growers: Bob Webb.

Show and Tell: Our featured plants this month for the show-and-tell table will be Sansevierias, Haworthias and Brazilian Cacti (Melocactus, Paraodia, Discocactus, Uebelmannia, and many columnar species). Any particularly beautiful plant is also welcome at our table. Bob is the owner of Arid Lands Greenhouses in Tucscon, a well-known mecca for succulent enthusiasts. He and his wife Toni have travelled extensively in search of particular plants growing in their habitats.
