pH Secrets for Growing Spectacular Cacti and Succulents, with Elton Roberts

Elton Roberts learned to love the desert when very young. His granddad would every so often take them out to the Anza Borrego Desert. Back in those days it was a lot different from today. While beside a stream they might only see two other cars go by all day long. Today the streams are no longer there and a thousand cars a day may go by that same spot. He has never forgotten those days and still loves the desert even today. Elton has had cactus plants off and on most of his life. His present collection started 40 years ago when at the time some stores were selling 2 inch pots of cactus plants for 10 cents. Now he has well over 2000 different kinds of cactus.

About 12 years ago Elton’s plants started going down hill. The only thing that may have kept the plants from all dying was using what rain water he could collect. No panacea but it kept the plants alive. In time he discovered it was the overly alkaline water he used that was the cause of deterioration. He tried a bucket of acid water and within days his plants improved and started growing. These were the first postive results he had in a long time.

Elton will give an informative and eye-opening demonstration of watering techniques for achieving the most optimal plant growth for cacti and other succulents.

Elton will also be our featured grower.

The plants of the month are Crassula, Rebutias, and any other cacti flowering or looking good to share with the other members.
