Mexico! with speaker Rob Parsons

Our July meeting will feature a presentation by Ron Parsons on a trip he made last year through central Mexico. Ron has been going to Mexico the last few years, primarily to study bulbs in the genus Calochortus.

Last year's trip (early September 2009) consisted of a flight to Guadalajara and a drive north through Zacatecas and Durango before heading east through Coahuila and then south again, exploring parts of Nuevo Leon, San Luis Potosi, Queretaro, Hidalgo, Guanajuato, and back to Jalisco. Several of the states were passed through two or three times, in a convoluted route. Eight states, 2000 miles, 8 days. This trip passed through a much drier region rich in cacti such as Mammillaria, Echinocereus, Echinocactus, Neolloydia, Epithelantha, Thelocactus, etc. There were many familiar succulents as well, in the genera Agave, Yucca, Fouquieria, Dasylirion, Nolina, etc. as well as various wildflowers including Calochortus. He will be showing all of these above-mentioned plants and more, as well as habitat shots.

Featured grower: Our featured grower will be Jim Smith, whose well-grown assortment of succulents have proved popular with our members at past meetings.

Show and Tell: The featured plants for our show and tell will be caudiciforms and pachycauls on the succulent side, plus Opuntias and their relatives on the cactus side. As always, we encourage members to bring in plants from any genus if they are in flower or looking especially good.
