Desert Bloom, with speaker Richard Bernard

Our July meeting will feature a presentation on the spring wildflower bloom in the deserts of the Southwest by Richard Bernard, an avid photographer. Richard is a life member and past president of the San Francisco Succulent and Cactus Society. He was also the first president of the Northern California Cactus and Succulent Association (NORCAL), and is a former CSSA board member and CSSA convention chairman. Richard is a long time resident of San Francisco and a Silicon Valley executive.

"Each spring for the last 20 years, I have traveled the American southwest to photograph the wildflower bloom. This past April, I traveled with friends to southern Arizona to check out the Sonoran Desert wildflowers. Our trip began in Tucson at Catalina State Park, proceeded down to the border, and then west on Ruby Road to Yuma, Arizona. There was lots to see. From Yuma, we traveled west to the eastern Anza Borrego Desert, then to north to the Salton Sea and on to Indio, California. At this point, we had crossed well into the Mojave Desert with its own unique flora. From Indio, we visited Joshua Tree National Monument. This is a wonderful wildflower area. From Joshua Tree we headed north to Palmdale and through the Antelope Valley. This year was one of the most outstanding poppy blooms I have ever seen there, with brilliant color visible from miles away. From the Antelope Valley we visited the Carrizo Plains National Monument and traveled onward to Morro Bay on the coast. There were a lot of flowers to see this year." -- Richard Bernard
