Nature and Plant Diversity in Patagonia
with Guillermo Rivera

Most people visit Patagonia in search for beautiful landscapes of snow-capped mountains and glacier lakes surrounded by pristine forests, or the incredible wildlife on the coast. Less visited or known are the amazing cacti that grow here.

At these latitudes, there are over 40 species of cacti, but because of their isolation, these plants are seldom known to most collectors or cacti enthusiasts. Also, because of their habitat, these cacti tolerate colder weather, and some of them even more humid conditions in the winter than plants found in Northwestern Argentina.

This talk will to show you the diversity of these poorly known plants as well as some of the widespread landscapes of this region of South America.

Born in Argentina, Guillermo is the owner of South America Nature Tours (formerly Cactus Expeditions), a company dedicated to the organization of tours throughout South America (Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador) with an emphasis on plants (bromeliads, cacti, and orchids), or birding. Guillermo was a former researcher at the University of Cordoba, Argentina and holds a BS degree in Biology, an MS in Marine Biology and a PhD in Botany.
