Our April program will feature Rudolf Schulz doing a presentation on succulents of the Canary Islands, which are a part of Spain. They are situated off the coast of Morocco, and have a Mediterranean climate with rain during the winter and dry summers. The Canary Islands are famed in succulent circles as the home of most of the Aeoniums, as well as Dracaena draco, the Dragon Tree. Rudolf was born in Germany and raised in California, and after graduating from San Francisco State he moved to Australia. He started out teaching, but moved into growing succulents as owner of a nursery called Tarrington Exotics Succulent Nursery, specializing in less common and harder to propagate succulents. He began an illustrious career as an author and book publisher in 1996 with the completion of a book on Copiapoa, co-authored with Attila Kapitany. Many other books on succulent plants followed, including one on Echeveria cultivars in 2005 and one on Aeoniums in 2007. Rudolf will bring copies of all his books to the meeting, so that members will have a chance to see them and perhaps buy one.
Featured Growers: Long time SFSCS member, Phiz Mezey, will be April's Featured Grower. Since she is downsizing her living abode (but thankfully will still be a San Franciscan), she is planning to have a nice variety of plants to sell. She also plans to sell a number of her treasured books from her horticultural library.
Show and Tell: Aeoniums, Canary Island Succulents and any plant that is particularly beautiful. |
